Excursion to the Revotano Karst Sinkhole
A fascinating excursion to discover the Revotano karst sinkhole, an emerald-green chasm 250 m in diameter and approximately 150 m deep. This sinkhole, one of the largest in the central Apennines, is surrounded by lush vegetation and cyclopean boulders. Legend has it that the ancient village of Roccantica once stood here, sinking due to the lack of religious belief of its inhabitants. Only a young girl, warned by a divine voice, survived and founded the new settlement.
The hike will begin from the medieval village of Roccantica (457 m), passing through a forest of holm oaks, oaks, and strawberry trees, until we descend along the Galantina stream, where we'll visit an ancient watermill. We'll continue up the mountain until we suddenly see a sinkhole, before descending into its abyss using ropes to facilitate the descent. It will be like entering an enchanted, moss-covered world.
During the excursion, we'll stop for a succulent barbecue lunch: bruschetta, sausages, arrosticini, grilled radicchio, artisanal biscuits, and wine.
