Hike with Your Dog Between Shepherd's Huts and the Ancient Roman Red Marble Quarry
An easy and pleasant hike starting from the village of Cottanello (550 m) and winding along a comfortable dirt road up to 800 m, reaching the Casette di Cottanello, a small shepherds' village. Many of the houses are abandoned or in ruins, but the place, nestled between woods and mountains, resembles a nativity scene, with animals grazing nearby. Before reaching the houses, we'll stop at the characteristic Roman quarry of red marble, known as "Pietra Persichina," quarried from Mount Lacerone. This marble, known since the 1st century BC, was used to decorate St. Peter's Basilica by artists such as Bernini.
After visiting the quarry, we'll continue to Pratoni for a relaxing lunch, featuring a grilled meat, fresh sausages and arrosticini from the "Madesabina" farm, bruschetta with Mompeo bread and extra virgin olive oil, artisanal biscuits, local red wine, and coffee. We'll have time to explore the abandoned houses and admire the grazing cattle before returning to the village of Cottanello.
